He now falls asleep independently (takes about 5 minutes to settle) at nap time and at night time and wakes 2-3 times at night for feeds (compared to 6-7 times previously and only sleeping on me or Dad). I am happy with the night time progress.

My concern is naps. He will not sleep past 30 minutes in the day time. This is where I am confused with the Ferber method. He definitely needs sleep as when he wakes after 30 mins he is grouchy the whole day. My question is, when he wakes at 30 minutes should I do the progressive waiting and checks for the nap duration (1 hour would be ok with me) or do I get him up and continue with the day until he needs another nap.

Thanks for any advice you can give. I am feeling a bit desperate at the moment as I seem to be in this never ending cycle during the day of grouchy baby and preparing for nap. It is making me pretty house bound!

Thanks so much!Katherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18227721315917254005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7230077724876087121.post-46177279199725887532018-01-26T00:40:11.051-07:002018-01-26T00:40:11.051-07:00Thanks so much for your time and advice Thanks so much for your time and advice Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08953282940753849835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7230077724876087121.post-79265190839457925622018-01-26T00:38:44.786-07:002018-01-26T00:38:44.786-07:00Hi there!

I have read your posts, and you suggest to wake baby up one hour prior to feed- if she seems to be waking up at the 3-4 mark, it’s time for a feed, is it okay to let her Whine for a bit and then go in and feed or am I confushing her? I let her whine and chat between sleep cycles at nap time and she will fall back asleep for at least one more cycle (because she usually wakes between sleep cycles).

Other question : she just started turning over onto her belly four days into training with Ferber method. She doesn’t know how to roll onto her back and will cry out of frustration- do I wait until she falls asleep to go into the room to roll her on her back- so concerned and feel terrible! I have watched her fall asleep on her face and I’m terrified as this is unsafe ...so I’ve gone in to turn her every time - should I try Ferber method at a later time, because to me, sleeping on her face is too unsettling for me to let her cry it out Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08953282940753849835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7230077724876087121.post-43676099772886976742018-01-05T19:44:31.142-07:002018-01-05T19:44:31.142-07:00Hi Rachel

We can’t seem to make them last longer. She goes to bed with a bath, breastfeed, book and song routine at 6:30/7 and wakes up at 6:30/7. She breastfeeds every 3-4 hours and eats solids twice a day. Since she was 4 months old she wakes up every 2-3 hours or more. We’ve tried transitioning her to a crib a couple times but then she wakes up every 30min or less all night. We did the Fever method with my first daughter and it worked great in only three nights. We just started the Fever method with my 6 month old. The first night she cried for 30min to an hour with only 30min of sleep in between each crying spell all night long. It was awful. We are starting night 2 and so far she’s doing the exact same thing. I’m not sure if I should continue, I’m worried about her. Any suggestions would be great!
ThanksElizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09138586979715728024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7230077724876087121.post-38477830581198099122018-01-02T13:31:01.650-07:002018-01-02T13:31:01.650-07:00MsERW,

We aren’t sure I’ve read various things- so say Just “talking” and fussing don’t count in time window- he’s 3month old so want to be consistent and do what’s right. Also would you get him up after 40mins if he’s not asleep? He’s so sleep deprived naps were 20mins prior to us starting this sleep training today- I usually cave and hold him since he’s so overtired - he also has reflux on medications and milk protein allergy trial hypoallergenic formula while I eliminate foods from my diet and pump- please help if you can as I want to make sure we are doing this right with our preemie Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03927713844030655023noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7230077724876087121.post-78745801782847911372017-12-05T08:56:33.174-07:002017-12-05T08:56:33.174-07:00I'm just not sure if her days/nights are confu...I'm just not sure if her days/nights are confused. I want to start Ferber method soon. Here's our troubles thus far: can fall asleep on her own but after her last feeding (around 7) she usually wakes and hour later crying again to eat, she often falls asleep by 8 but then I can't get her back to sleep before 11 usually. She will sleep a 5 hour stretch but it's been changing. What should my expectations be at this age? I'm exhausted and want her to sleep well. She naps two long naps during the day and usually one short nap. I do a routine with her every night. When it is time, do I start the timed checks after her last feed? And then when she wakes up an hour later start over? I find myself giving her extra food to sleep longer and I feel like she should just be very full at her last feeding and be good for several hours . Any advice? Tricks? How can I get her ready for this?Mrs. Hagensickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10029536768744154031noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7230077724876087121.post-51344376254540911062017-08-31T17:42:51.040-06:002017-08-31T17:42:51.040-06:00My 7 month nurses then we do our night time routin...My 7 month nurses then we do our night time routine and I put him to bed awake. My son is almost 10 months and he will fall asleep at night but he'll wake up crying a few times throughout the night. The crying lasts only 2 minutes and he'll fall back asleep. He started doing this on night 6. Does that mean he's regressing or is that a good thing that he falls back asleep on his own? My next question is about naps. Judging from the comments, I see that it is problematic for many other parents. I'm more focused on my son sleeping though the night but is it okay if he falls asleep outside of the crib? He will fall asleep while watching a show or in his play area. My mom watches my son during the day while I'm at work and I'm nervous that he'll sleep regress because of a different nap time routine at my mom's. Is that possible? I read on here that babies know the difference between naps and sleep time. Hopefully that's the case. Thanks! We did Ferber for our first child and she was literally like the book. Eventually she would tire out, sit down and crash. But our second one just keeps standing. Today is day 1 and on each of the 4 visits I have had to lay her down as she was standing for over an hour. We started at 8:30 pm and it's now 6:30 am - still standing! He cried for 1 hour on night 1 and successfully fell asleep on his own between 15 to 30 minutes for all of his naps. On night two, I was nursing him before bed like we usually do. He normally does not fall asleep during it but on night 2 he seemed to be falling asleep so I stopped nursing and burped him and I am sure he was awake when I put him down (he was holding his head up and moaning). However when I put him down, he rolled onto his side and fell asleep. In a panic, I rolled him onto his back and gently tried to rouse him. He just rolled over and instantly fell asleep. I am so worried that I have undone the progress we have made so far. I let him stay asleep and plan on weaning him off the bedtime nursing. How do I proceed from here?

Any guidance will be appreciated!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02018101113245561320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7230077724876087121.post-78168716140562869452017-06-17T01:55:21.672-06:002017-06-17T01:55:21.672-06:00Gina,

So you need to consider if any possible sleep changes you do now will really be followed more than a couple weeks. Much of the time you can make changes and be consistent and then have a few days off then jump back to you consistency again and be just fine, but I am unsure of how extensive surgery will be and he long your dr says it'll be before your sweet one is feeling well again. If it was my child I would be considering if it was worth taking away pacifier now or just waiting until it can't be used after surgery. I would probably choose now since I'd like less distress for baby right after surgery. If he really can't sleep without pacifier even with your help, then (once again, if it was my baby, you may feel better about doing something totally different) I would just get sleep training done with now since he's already going to be so upset about the pacifier--no use in extending it out forever by taking away one sleep prop slowly after another. Sometimes this works well, but often it doesn't, especially with strong willed or 'very obsessed with something to fall asleep' babies. In the end there isn't an obvious best thing to do. You have to weigh your options and decide what makes the most sense in your given situation. Helping a Child with special needs...Gina_sunshine,
Helping a Child with special needs learn to sleep has the potential to be so much more tough and emotional than it could be otherwise... you may feel uncertain about what is ok and safe to do in regards to helping them sleep and you may also feel more anxious and exhausted about, well, everything. You may also feel extra guilt associated with having a child feel any extra distress (that some sleep training can bring) when it feels like life is already so much tougher for them than it should be. The protective instinct has a tendency to kick in even stronger than it would otherwise. With my third child who was born with some brain abnormalities and muscle issues I found myself scared to let her even fuss for a second until her neurologist reassured me multiple times that she would be ok. I found myself holding onto her and not wanting to put her down as a newborn which, well, can lead to not the best sleep habits ;). But in the end I knew she needed to get good sleep do that not only could I function to be a good parent but do that she could be at her best-a tired and exhausted baby feels, well tired and exhausted which is not fun to feel. I would 1) check to see what your doctor says are healthy sleep goals for your son and double check if there are any issues at play that may make some distress and crying (in or not in your presence, depending on what you choose to do) not appropriate. My guess is that at this age with the cleft lip and palate and g tube it would be fine to try some sleep training, but I do not know all medical history. You'd have to secure g tube extra well. with the pacifier you kind of have to simply take it away now which will result in distress but there isn't some magic way around that. I would certainly have a good sleep routine in place and prevent overtirrdness etc. look at the 3-6 month sleep post for tips. You may want to do more if a chair method with sleep training, it's really up to what you feel comfortable doing and what the dr says is ok. Offer a small and safe lovie. Best of luck! We put her to bed awake the first night, she did have a fit that resulted in her vomiting (which I knew was going to happen) but with a quick clean up and 10 minutes later she was asleep. She woke once that night, cried for 2 mins and when back to sleep.
We are now going on two weeks. Have only had a couple evenings of upset that have included vomit, mostly just fusses for a few minutes before falling asleep. No more night time wake ups (and if there is she gets herself back to sleep in under 3 mins).
We also took away her sucky and have started to establish a better all around schedule and nap routine all at once.
Naps are ok .... some days better than others. Mornings are usually great, it's the afternoon one that she is fighting. Any tips on napping would be great.
Our current sleep schedule is:
Wake - 8am
1st Nap - 11 am (she has no problem sleeping for 90 mins but I feel like I should wake her because maybe that's why she isn't wanting to nap in the afternoon)
2nd Nap - try for 3/3:30 but sometimes it doesn't happen until closer to 4 after she cries for 20 mins.
Bedtime - we start at 8pm and she is usually in bed sleeping no later than 8:40
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17750676591710476652noreply@blogger.com
